But best of all—fall floatplane flights, racing the sun to a tiny cabin on a hidden lake. Wrinkled moraine land rippling beneath wings in a flashing kaleidoscope of golden birch, dark green spruce and glassy water lakes reflecting sky and clouds. Stick and rudder, wing and float, curving flight path matching river bend, then a short descent and soft whoosh of floats touching water. The pilot steps out on the float as the plane glides to the shore, pulling up her hip boots as the resident loon sends a haunting cry echoing over the lake.
